Crab Devil

Cooler than a Museum, Smarter than a Theme Park, Weirder than a Carnival!

The Peninsularium, Crab Devil’s premiere attraction, is a multi-year, multi-artist, multi-million-dollar effort to provide Tampa with its first and only permanent, immersive arts installation experience.

Through the guise of the roadside attraction, visitors to the Crab Devil Bait Shop discover The Peninsularium, a gateway to the fantastic. This immersive arts attraction is imagined as an all ages cabinet of curiosities ripe with kitsch, bizarre, little-known history, and fantastical lore showcasing Florida at its most weird, wild, and wonderful.

The Experience

As visitors enter the bait shop, they are encouraged to explore the attached museum. Transported into an otherworldly series of unique oddities, entrants delight in the immersive spaces showcasing Florida’s eccentric culture and the curious history of our nation’s most infamous peninsula.

Drawing on Tampa’s history as a port city and center of maritime commerce, The Peninsularium is constructed from an assemblage of repurposed shipping containers harkening back to the traveling circuses of the early 1900s.

Community Focus

We opened in the heart of Tampa to contribute to the existing community. Located within the East Tampa Community Redevelopment Area, designated as an “Opportunity Zone” by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, our neighborhood has been incentivized for job creation, small businesses, and real estate to provide equitable opportunities and stimulate return investment back to the historic and established population.

Crab Devil aims to invest in the people and the place. Our business model contains inclusive hiring practices, the promotion of diverse historical contexts, and the implementation of other equity-based initiatives as we grow. Crab Devil is sincerely dedicated to expanding opportunities and contributing resources to the local community through arts and cultural experiences.
